Put the Most Important Information First
Don’t be afraid to break away from the standard resume format that is now decades old. The people reviewing your resume will want to make a quick decision whether to place your resume on the interview pile or not so give them the information they need as quickly as possible.
Add a Photo
Adding a photo of yourself to your resume converts you from just another faceless, unknown applicant to a real person. A photo will create a visual point of differentiation between your resume and the rest immediately. It will also make your resume, and most importantly you, much more memorable.
Tailor Your Cover Letter
Be sure to tailor your cover letter to the role and company you are applying to. However, there are some career fields where you may need to have a resume that is two or more pages long if you have been in the field for a long time, but the general rule of thumb is one page.
- Instead of listing references on your resume, just include a simple statement that they are available upon request. Usually employers will only ask for references if they are serious about hiring you, therefore they will most likely request references at your job interview.
- Make your resume professional. Do not include information such as race, height, weight, etc. If you include your email address, make sure that it is a professional sounding email as well.
- Use professional paper stock. Something with a little weight to it, but not too heavy. Do not use colored paper unless the position that you are applying for calls for something of that nature.
